Easy Instructions
Follow these steps for a perfect grow!
-
PEEL
Peel out the perforated cut out.
This exposed the substrate block which has been fully colonised by the mycelium. The mycelium should look whispy white.
What's inside? What you're looking at is the substrate which is made of sawdust and soy hull that has been fully colonised, essentially eaten up, by the mycelium. Mycelium is the white spider web looking thing throughout the substrate and is actually the living organism itself!
-
CUT
With a clean knife or scissors, cut an 'X' into the bag.
Tip: Leave it alone! Resist the urge to put your fingers in the cut and peel the plastic back. This just introduces contamination.
Where to put it? Somewhere away from sunlight but not in the dark. Remember these mushrooms are forest mushrooms so they like ambient light and fresh air. We like to put it on the kitchen bench top, that way we see it multiple times a day and can easily mist it the watch it grow!
-
MIST
Give the 'X' a mist with water 2 - 3 times a day. Remember you're replicating humidity not rain so do not water it too heavily. Maybe 4-6 sprays from about a forearms lengh away.
Tip: At first the water will sit on top of the 'X' and not "get inside". Thats ok!! You're creating evaporative humidity which is what you want. The substrate has the water it needs inside so you are not watering it like a plant.
-
HARVEST
Mushrooms nearly double in size a day so once they start growing keep a good eye on them! Oysters take about 10 days and Lion's Mane takes about 14 days to fully grow! Since they grow so fast they won't stay forever and you need to harvest them when they're ready.
To harvest: Lay the kit flat on it's back. place one hand at the base of the mushroom and the other on the top of the kit. Pull up and the mushroom should come away from the substrate.

Questions?
Which one is the easiest to grow?
Lion's Mane and White Oyster tend to be the most bulletproof. Chocolate and Pink Oysters can be a bit more temperamental with temperatures. Pinks like warm and Chocolates like cold.
Is there a flavour difference between them?
Yes! Lion's Mane tastes the least "mushroomy". It's extremely mild flavoured.
White and Chocolate Oysters are that classic mild earthy flavour.
Pink Oysters are for the mushroom lovers. It has a bold umamy flavour, so much so that it actually tastes like ham or bacon!
How long can I wait until I need to open it?
It is a living organism so you want to use it as soon as possible to retain it's vigour and to have the best experience. Using it within the first few weeks is ideal. After 6 weeks it can start to become quite oxygen starved.
Alternatively, you can store the Lion's Mane, White Oyster and Chocolate Oyster in the fridge for up to 3 months. The cold puts the mycelium to sleep. Note: do not put Pink Oysters in the fridge. They are vigorous tropical oysters and need to live in temperatures above 10 degrees or else they'll die.
Do I need to put it in the dark?
Nope! These mushrooms are forest mushrooms and like normal ambient light. They actually will not grow properly in the dark!
How will I know when it's ready?
Oyster mushrooms have caps that are curled under when they're growing, kind of like if you have your hand out with your fingers curled in to your palm. When the caps unfurl and go flat.. it's time to harvest! Lion's Mane is ready to harvest when it goes from a smooth texture to a fur like texture!
What is the best way to gift?
Wait as long as possible to buy the kit. For example, if its a Christmas gift, buy in December not in October. Otherwise, a gift voucher may be ideal so the gift receiver can redeem it when they're ready to grow!
