The cold pasteurisation method uses calcium hydroxide to increase the pH of straw substrate while it's soaking. Use as little as 1g for every litre and if more is used that is ok, it just dissipates and doesn't negatively affect the outcome. A window of 1-3% still means that typically only small amounts, around 50 to 150g, is used in a single pasteurisation run.
Storage: Keep a dry when not in use. Reseal the bag between uses.
Recipe: Add 1g of hydrated lime powder per litre of water. Mix and soak straw overnight for 12-18 hours.
Note: Calcium hydroxide powder is also called builder's lime. It is not the same as gardeners lime. It is also not a lime powder as in fruit flavouring or pickling lime.
SAFETY WARNING: Calcium hydroxide is alkaline and can cause irritation. Use in a well-ventilated environment and always wear gloves, a mask and safety glasses when handling.
